Video's, The Most Powerful Medium.
Video's, The Most Powerful Medium.
Video,
when it comes to communication, is the most interactive form of
communication, as it is comprised of moving image and sound. But what
happens if the element of spoken word is removed from the equation?
Does this communication method lose any of it's power? After all,
language is the most powerful symbol, it is used throughout societies
all over the world to attach meaning in day to day life. Especially
in regards to social media. Eliminating the use of the spoken word
and relying solely on the moving image, as well as the chosen music
not only force the creator to really think about the impact each
image will have on the viewer, this includes metaphors and other non
verbal cues as well.
Overall,
the process of shooting, editing, and posting of the video was quite
fluid. Due to previous classes that involved post video production
which provided instruction with the same editing software that was
used in the creation of the video made the overall process much more
efficient. Prior experience also made it possible to properly film
the required video content that was needed to properly portray the
concept of separation that was assigned. This held true with the
group video as well, knowledge and experience were driving factors in
not only completing the self video, but also making sure the group
was successful in attaining the footage that was needed, then
compiling it and finished product that was used to convey the
overall topic of separation between personal lives and school lives.
But why
use video? Why not just use a couple pictures to portray the students
in their subjective environments to portray separation? Well, the
difference between photo and video lies in the motion, while a single
picture only tells a single frame of the story, video has the
potential to portray the entire topic in a much more efficient
manner. This can be attributed to the fact that with video, both the
pre and past tense of the situation is established. Resulting in a
better understanding of the message that is being conveyed upon the
viewer.
Writing
however, is a completely different story. While it is true that the
written word holds literary elements, and making proper use of
metaphors, similes, and allegory will create quality content with an
engaging message that will hold a readers attention. But at the end
of the day, society is driven by visual stimulation, the more
visually stimulating the content of the message is, the more it will
be desired in today's society. This can be seen in all aspects of
world today,Televisions dominate over books, even in the music
community. Producers with the most visually pleasing and intricate
video graphics tend to be the ones who have gained the largest
following. This trend can also be seen in social media, often, in
today's environment, simply posting objectively isn't enough. The
public scrolling on Instagram and twitter want visual content to back
up the information that has been read, this not only makes the
message stand out, but will also leave more a chance that the message
will resonate with the receiver thus strengthening the overall
quality of the message.
When attempting to create a video
project that is intended to be professional in nature but personal
in content, there may or may not be limitations based on multiple
different factors. First, depending on the persons lifestyle and
hobbies they more be less inclined to advertise what is being done in
their spare time, and will attempt to portray a more commercial
version of themselves. Due to leading an interesting life with
various different hobbies and lines of work that are centered around
arts and entertainment the opportunity presented it's self to produce
a video that was both authentic and artistic that truly portrayed the
separation from life as student, and life as a roofer/ fire dancing
boyfriend that is pursuing his dream of a career in strategic
communications and the entertainment industry.
So when
a person is asked to make a one minute long video that is supposed to
be a representation of every thing that is them, using footage that
they shot and edited without the ability to use the spoken word or
written messages of any kind what should be included? One must really
stop, think, and take into account what really represents them both
as a student trying to graduate and launch a career, and as a person
who is out living a unique existence as an autonomous individual in
an ever changing world. Only after taking this into account can one
really make an attempt at finding the symbols that are used to
socially construct existence, shoot it with a camera, find music that
matches the quality of the footage and then edit it into something
that is both truly representative of the individual that still
portrays the topic of separation in a one minute time frame. making
it so every piece of footage used must really be meaningful to the
story, as well as edited in a cohesive manner to add to the
functionality of the message being portrayed.
The
process of uploading the video to social media was equally efficient.
The video has been uploaded to YouTube and Facebook. Also, years of
experience of post video production, properly exporting projects, and
posting them to social media is paramount in posting to social media
properly, if rendered wrong, one could spend hours trying to figure
out why the video doesn't look or sound right after being uploaded to
the internet. However, due to some of the licensing and copyright
restrictions on Facebook and YouTube, the music that had been
selected for the video has the potential to be muted. However if the
person who posted the video disputes it the audio is returned. While
it is a less than ideal situation, the end result of the video
remains the same as it is now live on social media. And just
remember, a picture says a thousand words, but a video tells the
whole story.
